We Can’t Handle the Truth

Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men- 1992

We are all delusional. Let’s admit it. None of us wants to think the worst about ourselves. We all think that we are “good” people with “good” hearts. But are we?

Some of us are mean, down right cruel, judgmental beasts that don’t want to be corrected, reprimanded, or critiqued.

None of us want to be told the “truth” about ourselves. None of us want to face the consequences of our actions. What we want, is to be given the benefit of the doubt- always.

Yes, we are all delusional.

As I read the recent Twitter “statement” of a national journalist who responded to his firing, I raised an eyebrow at the part where he stated,” It is clear that there are some larger issues at play.”

Well, maybe. But it’s possible you were a difficult employee that made the office a hostile place for others. Maybe you were insubordinate. Maybe you were a detriment to the company.

Who knows? I certainly have no inside information regarding this incident. But it seems he isn’t taking responsibility for any part of his dismissal.

I’m careful to take daily inventory of my behaviors while in the workplace. I work in education. It’s the end of another school year and it seems that everyone is up in arms regarding one thing or another. The amount of senseless, delusional emails I receive on a weekly basis is staggering.

I certainly realize that I’m not always right. So, I take criticisms seriously and try to delve into the heart of the matter when it comes to my job performance. Then, make changes as I see fit.

Maybe we should all follow suit.

    1. I try really hard to take people’s criticisms of me seriously. It’s hard, and my feelings get hurt sometimes. But it makes me grow.
