A Social Media Story

Social media is an equally dangerous and wondrous entity. It gives us access to information we wouldn’t otherwise be able to access- information that could be beneficial or detrimental. Moreover, social media connects us with people half-way across the world that we’d never meet face to face.

There are a plethora of “friends” I have meet throughout my years on social media. Some I’ve met in real life. Some, not. There’s one “friend” in particular. A professional writer, author and reality TV presence whose talents caught my attention many, many years ago. When I consider what I want my life to be like, I immediately think of this person. They are living an astonishing fairytale…traveling the world, meeting fascinating people, publishing books, writing magazine articles, producing podcasts, being interviewed…

While I marvel at their experiences, it’s really this person’s writing talent that strikes me. Their storytelling is breathtaking. Almost every day, I open social media and read fantastical tales of their adventures. They are wildly entertaining.

A few weeks ago, this influencer communicated with their followers an alarming encounter they had. The writer assured us that they were well, but the tale was disturbing. Half-way around the world, hotel security had to be summoned, and police eventually became involved.

It has been two full weeks since the post and this influencer has gone radio silent, deleting two of their most used social media pages.

While this is not a personal friend or loved one, I am concerned. This person has gone from posting multiple times a day to literally disappearing. I thought of sending an email, but that may be viewed as intrusive.

Of course, this is all silly on my part. I don’t really KNOW this person. And I probably sound like a stalker. But this is what social media does – allows for meaningful connections.

I’m hoping for an update soon.

What has been your experience with social media? Has it helped or hurt you? Added value or diminished the quality of your life. Let me know in the comments!

  1. Hey, Krystal. I know exactly who you are talking about. She posted a new podcast episode yesterday or the day before. Apparently, she has left the Motherland and is now in London. I haven’t listened to the episode yet (I am playing catch-up, listening to her podcasts from last year during my commutes home from work), but I read the caption underneath the posted episode.

  2. Social media has helped me tremendously. I have family all around the world and it helps me keep in touch with them and their families. If I didn’t have it I would not have seen my nephews new coffee shop in Qatar, I would not have seen my great nieces first steps. But in the same token I would not have known my cousin was arguing with his wife. So it has its trade offs. I am grateful to be able to be that fly on the wall of their lives. But sometimes please leave me in the dark regarding the personal.

    1. A coffee shop in Qatar? That is wonderful. Social media has helped me stay connected with so many people. But as you stated, sometimes we overshare! LOL
